Vehicle Tracking Device - Eurovia

One of the leading UK providers of transport and infrastructure services, Eurovia UK incorporates Ringway, a leading highways maintenance provider and Eurovia specialist businesses. It provides a comprehensive range of integrated services from surfacing and construction, manufacturing and installation of signs, production and laying of road marking materials and specialised surfacings.

Eurovia champions a ‘zero work incidents’ policy, and as such dedicates large amounts of resource to health and safety training and adopts a policy of preventative measures for work-related risks.

For this reason, when the decision was made to bring on a telematics solution, Eurovia sought a provider which not only had the capability to lower costs and improve day-to-day business efficiency, but one which could also help boost duty of care and driver safety for its employees who travel many miles a year with the company.

The Solution

Eurovia began a consultation programme with Masternaut to address the organisation’s requirements. Masternaut’s real-time tracking solution, ScreenWatcher, was recommended as the solution they required to meet their health and safety targets, and was consequently installed into Eurovia’s commercial fleet vehicles.

A web-based asset tracking system which delivers second-by second updates of exact vehicle whereabouts from a vehicle tracking device, ScreenWatcher displayed the capabilities to monitor the whole of Eurovia’s highways fleet therefore providing real-time visibility of the whereabouts of the workforce as well as monitoring speeding, route details and time sheets.

The Outcome

The implementation of ScreenWatcher and a vehicle tracking device into Eurovia’s highways fleet led to cost savings on incident claims as well as external recognition that helped to improve their reputation and future business prospects. Alongside increased fleet efficiency – including a reduction in mileage, increased productivity and decreased customer complaints – Eurovia’s fleet managers and senior-level executives quickly recognised the desired improvement in driver safety.

This was affirmed when Eurovia was awarded gold in the RoSPA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) awards for Managing Occupational Road Risk first prize in the Company Driver Safety Award of the Fleet Safety Forum Awards, and were highly commended for another category, the Fleet Safety Innovation Award. In addition, the company was shortlisted for both the Highways Magazine Excellence Awards – for the Highway Worker & Site Safety Initiative category – and the SHP IOSH awards for the Campaign of the Year category.

Each award recognised Eurovia’s excellent road risk management systems, highlighting the company’s ‘Drive for Life’ campaign which Eurovia ran with significant support from Masternaut.

The nationwide campaign was developed to promote safe and environmentally-friendly driving with the specific object of reducing road collisions while at the same time creating greater road-risk awareness within the company. It targeted employees across the organisation with categories including ‘Best Commercial Vehicle Driver’, which was judged based on data generated by the ScreenWatcher solution.

The campaign was a huge success: there was a high level of participation across the company and by the time the campaign finished, Eurovia had witnessed an overall reduction in the number of incidents by 30%.
